The Miracle of pH by Dr. Robert O Young

Dr. Robert O. Young, PhD, DSc, ND, formulator of the New Biology Theory of Health and Dis-ease, states: “Excess acidity is a condition that weakens all body systems.” How?

“Excess acidity forces the body to borrow minerals – including sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium -from vital organs and bones to buffer (neutralize) the acid and to safely remove it from the body. As a result, the body can suffer severe and prolonged ‘corrosion’ due to high acidity – a condition that may go undetected for years.”

Over-acidity affects virtually every person in Westernized society because of our dietary and lifestyle choices and ecological exposure – resulting in creating our own “internal environment where dis-ease can easily manifest, as opposed to a pH-balanced environment which allows for normal body functions – necessary for the body to resist dis-ease …”

If we have a healthy body, we will manage to maintain sufficient alkaline mineral reserves to meet emergency demands placed on us by stress and poor diet or lifestyle choices.

“However when excess acids must be continually neutralized, our alkaline reserves are depleted, leaving the body in a weakened, dis-ease-prone condition.” The pancreas is one of our body’s organs charged with the awesome responsiblilty to “alkalinize” us … can you start to see how our serious acidosis has overwhelmed our pancreas’ ability to operate effectively, that then results in a state called “diabetes”, a condition which can respond in a natural way toward Health as a result of the proper, needed changes, for all kinds of pre-diabetics and diabetics.

Amazingly and unfortunately, many health practitioners still believe that the body can some how miraculously cope on its own and that our body can still ‘naturally’ balance its pH. It’s not true, for most of us are NOT living in Nature and eating raw foods and herbs. Our self-created truth is so far beyond this ideal.

pH ... Hydrogen Ion Activity

The technical definition of pH is that it is a measure of the activity of the hydrogen ion (H+) and is reported as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the hydrogen ion activity. Therefore, a water with a pH of 7 has 10-7 moles per liter of hydrogen ions; whereas, a pH of 6 is 10-6 moles per liter. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14.

Acidic = 0 Neutral = 7 Basic = 14

In general, a water with a pH < 7 is considered acidic and with a pH > 7 is considered basic. The normal range for pH in surfacewater systems is 6.5 to 8.5 and for groundwater systems 6 to 8.5. Alkalinity is a measure of the capacity of the water to resists a change in pH that would tend to make the water more acidic. The measurement of alkalinity and pH is needed to determine the corrosivity of the water.

The pH of pure water (H20) is 7 at 25oC, but when exposed to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere this equilibrium results in a pH of approximately 5.2. Because of the association of pH with atmospheric gases and temperature, it is strongly recommended that the water be tested as soon as possible. The pH of the water is not a measure of the strength of the acidic or basic solution and alone does not provide a full picture of the characteristics or limitations with the water supply.

In general, a water with a low pH (< 6.5) could be acidic, soft, and corrosive. Therefore, the water could leach metal ions such as: iron, manganese, copper, lead, and zinc from the aquifer, plumbing fixtures, and piping. Therefore, a water with a low pH could contain elevated levels of toxic metals, cause premature damage to metal piping, and have associated aesthetic problems such as a metallic or sour taste, staining of laundry, and the characteristic "blue-green" staining of sinks and drains . The primary way to treat the problem of low pH water is with the use of a neutralizer. The neutralizer feeds a solution into the water to prevent the water from reacting with the house plumbing or contributing to electrolytic corrosion ; a typical neutralizing chemical is soda ash. Neutralizing with soda ash increases the sodium content of the water. A water with a pH > 8.5 could indicate that the water is hard. Hardwater does not pose a health risk, but can cause aesthetic problems.

Some of the most important differences between systems are impossible to detect just by drinking a glass of treated water. In fact, judging a system by taste, odour and clarity of the treated water is the least effective and accurate way to compare one system with another. Taste alone cannot tell you what is truly important about water treatment system.
